The Basics

Sewing Scissors

What is it used for:
-Cutting material, fur, etc.

Info:
-Are about $5-$20 depending where you find them and what brand. (Fiskars shown above)
-Most material stores will hold these types of scissors.
-Get cheaper scissors to cut paper. Try not to use these types of scissors for paper cutting, they will dull the edge.
-Fiskars "Razor Sharp" Scissors are a bit more expensive, but will cut easily through fur, and even leather, without tearing/shredding
Detailing Scissors

What is it used for:
-Detailed cutting
-Terrific for cutting fur-backing, and NOT the fur itself.

Info:
-Are about $5-$20 depending where you find them and what brand. (Fiskars shown above)
-Most material stores will hold these types of scissors.



Bandage Scissors


What is it used for:
-Cutting a person out of a duct tape dummy

Info:
-They have a blunt ends (some have rubber tips) to keep them from cutting into skin.
-Are about $3-$7 depending where you find them.
-Most Rite-Aid, or drug stores carry these.

Scissor Sharpener

What is it used for:
-Sharpening most types of 'regular' scissors

Info:
-They are about $15
-Most material stores will hold these

Curved Needles
(2 shown)
What is it used for:
-Sewing difficult to get places (like fur on heads or feet-paws)

Info:
-They are about $2-$3
-Most material stores will hold these

-Come in different lengths/thicknesses

Hand-Sewing Needles

What is it used for:
-Sewing by hand

Info:
-They are about $2-$3
-Most material stores will hold these

-Come in different lengths/thicknesses
Ball Point Quilting Needles

What is it used for:
-Keeping fur attached to itself, or its pattern

Info:
-They are about $3-$15
-Most material stores will hold these
-Come in many different quantities
-Extra long for easy attaching.
Safety Pins

What is it used for:
-To pin the suit together for a "test fitting" before sewing

Info:
-They are about $1-3 for a box of 50
-Most material stores will hold these





Thread

What is it used for:
-Sewing material or fur.

Info:
-They are about $2-$3
-Most material stores will hold these
-Quilting or
upholstery thread is nice, thick and strong, suggested for sewing fur.




Seam Ripper

What is it used for:
-Cutting threaded seams out of material

Info:
-They are about $5
-Most material stores will hold these
-If you use it backwards (where round part is) it is also good for taking fur out of seams without cutting!
Pin Cushion (tomato type)

What is it used for:
-Keeping Pins and needles all organized in one place

Info:
-They are about $3-$5
-Most material stores will hold these








Tape Measure

What is it used for:
-Measuring parts of your body, or material.

Info:
-They are about $1-3
-Most material stores will hold these
-Come in different lengths and colors.






Thimbles

What is it used for:
-Put on your finger or thumb to prevent pricking yourself with needles

Info:
-They are about $1-3
-Most material stores will hold these
-Come in different materials: plastic, metal or even just thimble-pads

Washout pencils, fabric pencils, charcoal pencils, and colored chalk

What is it used for:
-Marking the backing of fur/fabric with the pattern.


Info:
-They are about $2
-Most material stores will hold these

 

 

Super 77 - Spray Adhesive

What is it used for:
-Attaching fur to foam, fur to fur, etc.

Info:
-They are about $8-$10
-Most hardware and material stores will hold this

-Always use in a ventilated area!


Glue Gun (Dual or Single Temp)

What is it used for:
-Attaching fur to foam, fur to fur, etc.

Info:
-They are about $10-30
-Most hardware stores will hold this.
-Single or Dual Temp available
-Corded or non Corded available
-VERY hot! Be Careful when using

Duct / Gaffer Tape

What is it used for:
-Creating Duct Tape Dummies

Info:
-They are about $5/roll
-Will need about 4 for a duct tape dummy
-Don't use cheap thin duct tape for dummies, it will not stick to itself well. Use thick heavy duty type.


ZipTies

What is it used for:
-Zip-tying plastic mesh together for heads.

Info:
-They are about $5 for 1000 ties
-Come in various sizes, thicknesses,colors.

Snap-off Blade Razor

What is it used for:
-Excellent for cutting through fabric or fur
-Sculpting foam


Info:
-They are about $5
-Most hardware stores will hold these

-If tip gets dull, you can just stap a part off





Rotory Blade

What is it used for:
-Cutting through fabric or fur


Info:
-They are about $10-15
-Most material stores will hold these

-If tip gets dull, you can switch blades
-Need to use a cutting pad
X-acto Blade

What is it used for:
-Excellent for cutting through fabric


Info:
-They are about $5
-Most hardware/hobby stores will hold these

-If tip gets dull, you can just replace the blade





Electric Knife

What is it used for:
-Cutting foam for heads

Info:
-They are about $15

-Blades can get dull very quickly, you CAN buy a knife sharpener made for these, but its just as expensive to buy a new knife.
Cutting Mat

What is it used for:
-Cutting without damaging a tape or carpet
-Measuring

Info:
-They are about $5-25
-There are many sizes available

Awl Kit

What is it used for:
-Punching holes through tough material such as leather
-Removing fur safely from seams

Info:
-They are about $10-20
-Most hardware stores will hold these


Respirator

What is it used for:
-Protecting your lungs

Info:
-Always used while using spray foam/adhesives, sewing plastic, airbrushing, or working with fiberglass
-Most hardware stores will hold these

-They are anywhere from $10-50

Safety Glasses

What is it used for:
-Protecting your eyes

Info:
-They are about $5-10
-Always wear these when sawing, griding, or drilling.



Pliers

What is it used for:
-Grabbing small things
-Snipping wires

Info:
-They are about $5
-There are many types, Needle Nose, and Snipping are the most common

Rulers

What is it used for:
-Measuring
-Cutting straight


Info:
-They are about $2-5
-Suggested are: a long metal ruler (42"), and a short clear plastic ruler (12")



Sewing Machine

What is it used for:
-Sewing the suit together

Info:
-They are about $50-$1000
-Can buy for cheap on Ebay!
-Many types out there, from simple to complex.
-Not neccessary to build a suit, but will save a lot of hurt of the fingers if you hand-sew.





Advanced tools
Dremel tool

What is it used for:
-Cutting, Griding, etc.

Info:
-They are about $30
-Hundreds of uses
-Tons of attachments available on the market



Heat Gun

What is it used for:
-Heating up plastic to bend

Info:
-They are about $25-40
-Great for bending plastic rods for tails, or thermoplastic for shaping heads.
-Wear gloves or mits when using this! Materials get VERY VERY hot!
Leatherman

What is it used for:
-Multiple uses, cutting, holding, sawing, opening a can!

Info:
-They are about $40-100
Scrollsaw

What is it used for:
-Cutting sheet plastic (such as Foam-PVC) to use in making hard plastic heads

Info:
-They are about $200-300


Airbrush Kit (Shown W/ Compressor)

What is it used for:
-For blending colors on a suit together
-Changing fur color in places
-Adding stripes or spots to a suit.


Info:
-Not necessary to make a fursuit
-They are about $50-400
-Most hardware/hobby stores will hold these

-You can find them pretty cheap on Ebay
-'Badger' brand is a good starter airbrush.
-Be sure to IMMEDATELY clean the brush with airbrush cleaner and water to keep it in good working order!
-You can used 'canned air' or 'SCUBA' air tanks instead of a compressor
Airbrush ink/paint

What is it used for:
-Used in an airbrush (or you can use on a paintbrush as well!) to change the color of fur.


Info:
-They are about $5/bottle
-Most hobby stores will hold these

-Comes in EVERY color under the rainbow (Including glow in the dark!)
-Comes in 4oz. - 32oz bottles.
-Some times like 'Createx paint' is heat-setable, so it should not wash completely out of the suit when cleaning.
-May wash out if not a heat-set type of paint.



Soldering Iron/Gun

What is it used for:
-Soldering metal together (usually for metal-framed heads)

Info:
-They are about $15
-30
-Can be found cheap on Ebay!










Fur Trimmer

What is it used for:
-Trimming longer fur down shorter (good for muzzles)

Info:
-They are about $10-30
-Most pet stores will hold these

-Trim the fur with scissors, longer than you want, then use the different blades to trim to the length you want.
   




Materials / Fasteners

Plastic Mesh / Canvas

What is it used for:
-For making plastic mesh heads

Info:
-They are about $5 for a 12" x 12" sheet.
-Come in various sizes, thicknesses,colors.






Muslin Fabric

What is it used for:
-Creating a 'tailored' pattern to your body size.

Info:
-Its cheap, about $.50-$2/yard
-Most material stores will hold this material
-Nice and cheap to make sure your pattern fits you perfectly.
-Use this BEFORE you make your bodysuit.

-Can use cheap sheets found in "secondary stores" in place of this.

Velcro

What is it used for:
-Attaching things (such in place of a zipper)

Info:
-They are about $5-10 for multi-strips
-Most material stores will hold this
-Come in various sizes, widths, colors.
Zippers

What is it used for:
-To get in and out of a suit.

Info:
-They are about $5-7
-Can have metal or plastic 'teeth'
-Come in various sizes, lengths,colors
-Can be sewn in front, side, or back of suit


Snaps

What is it used for:
-Attaching things (such in place of a zipper)

Info:
-They are about $5 for four large ones
-Come in various sizes, and colors
